Life Worth Talking About: How VOANS Communities Celebrate the Stories That Shape Us

At Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS) senior living communities, care goes far beyond meeting daily needs; it’s about honoring the lives, experiences, and memories that make each resident who they are. Every person has a story worth talking about, and our teams are committed to helping bring those stories to light in meaningful and inspiring ways.

One remarkable example is Bob D’Arcy, a resident at Horizons Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. At 93 years old, Bob carries with him a lifetime of personal and career milestones.

Fresh out of the military at just 22, Bob found himself at the very beginning of something iconic – the creation of Disneyland. Hired in 1955, Bob was assigned to driving Walt Disney’s own Jeep, delivering blueprints across the construction site as the park took shape around him.

But his role quickly evolved into something even more extraordinary. On opening day, Bob became the very first Guest Relations Host, welcoming guests through the gates of Disneyland.

From there, he went on to guide some of the most recognizable names of the era, including Jimmy Stewart and Frank Sinatra, offering them a firsthand, VIP look at the magic behind the park. Bob recounts many of his wild adventures in his book: A Walk in the Park: Reflections from Disneyland’s First Host.

In addition to his Disney connections, Bob was an actor who played The Robot in an episode of Gilligan’s Island in 1966 and was the stunt double for Bob Denver (Gillian). He also worked on several other popular television show episodes and films throughout his career.

It is the kind of story that captures attention instantly. At VOANS, it is also the kind of story that gets preserved, celebrated, and shared. Because behind every resident is a lifetime of experiences that include careers, adventures, families, and passions. All of it deserves to be remembered and honored.

Our teams take time to listen. Whether it’s through casual conversations, organized storytelling opportunities, or creative programs that encourage reflection, we create space for residents to revisit meaningful moments and share them with others. These stories don’t just enrich the lives of the individuals telling them, they inspire fellow residents, staff, and families alike.

In Bob’s case, his journey from a young veteran to a key figure at Disneyland’s opening is more than a fascinating anecdote. It is a reminder of the incredible paths people take and the history they carry with them into our communities and programs.

Across VOANS communities, residents are former teachers, artists, entrepreneurs, parents, and more. When we take the time to hear their stories, we build deeper connections and create a stronger sense of belonging for everyone. Identities don’t fade with age – they evolve. By celebrating personal histories and encouraging residents to share their personal journeys, we help ensure those stories continue to live on.
