World Health Day Reflections from VOANS Senior Vice President of Healthcare Paul Soczynski

As we recognize World Health Day on April 7, I’d like to share a perspective for your consideration. Health is more than simply physical health. There are more dimensions to focus on to assure we are living a holistic life.

I have been reading a very brief book titled “Know Thyself: The 7 Dimensions of Wellness” by Joshua K. Darnall. For this World Health Day, perhaps, there is some information provided from this resource that will help you in your own journey to achieve wellness.

The 7 dimensions are described as:

  1. Spiritual Wellness: having a healthy relationship with yourself and your higher power
  2. Emotional Wellness: understanding your subconscious thoughts and how they help you achieve success and happiness
  3. Mental Wellness: the mastery of intention and attention where intention is the focus on your goals and attention is where you put your time and energy into accomplishing your intentions
  4. Physical Wellness: holistic optimization of sleep, diet, water intake, exercise, self-care and stimulus
  5. Professional Wellness: satisfaction with your contribution to the welfare of society often exchanging your time for financial compensation
  6. Financial Wellness: understanding the monetary energy you use to earn income and how you spend your economic resources
  7. Relational Wellness: nurturing a supportive cast of loved ones surrounding you to help you with the other six dimensions

As this book outlines, each of us can grade ourselves for where we are for each dimension. Based on that self-evaluation, we can identify ways to increase our score/grade to achieve a higher level of overall wellness. Another image on the cover of the book is how the seven dimensions form the spokes of a wheel and if any of the dimensions aren’t fully realized or are flattened, the wheel won’t spin and move effectively.

I encourage you to consider each of these factors and evaluate where you might improve to achieve an overall higher sense of wellness. Please, think about this beyond April 7. Consider some form of this on an on-going basis to maintain your overall health and wellness.

Cheers to your good health and striving for your ultimate holistic wellness.
